Modec Land £3m Deal for Electric Vans

Modec, a Coventry based van company announced yesterday that they had sealed a £3m van contract with a French distributor. Modec announced this news just after they released details that their electric delivery van had gained the EC Whole Vehicle Type Approval. What this means is that the delivery van can be sold to any EU country without having to go through more tests.

UPS, FedEx, Tesco and Center Parcs are only a few of the major clients that the electric van manufacturer, Modec, can boast about. They can now add another client to their list, French distributor, ElecTruckCity.

ElecTruckCity is a van dsitribtor based in France, they are now going to be the first French Modec distributor. Bill Gillespie, chief executive of Modec, said this about the deal: “International demand for Modec is extremely strong. ElecTruckCity has taken the lead by setting up a distribution network in France and we are very excited about the future of the French market."

The vans that were bought by ElecTruckCity were the popular urban delivery vans. There are now over 150 Modec delivery vans around the UK, owned by clients such as FedEx. The reason why these vans are so popular is because they are design for city use. The van which can travel 100 miles using the lithium battery, costs only 15p per mile, compared to a petrol powered van which can cost 37p per mile.

The vans help companies like UPS reduce their emmissions and improve their corporate image by saving more than 9 tonnes of CO2 each year.

As these Modec vans become ever more popular, it appears that the common vans that you see around like Citroen vans or Nissan vans will have alot of competition as more and more companies want to get greener.

Modec are also going to be tackling the tipper van market with the introduction of their electric powered tipper van. The new tipper van has been designed for local authority refuse collection. No doubt these will become popular as councils try to lead the way for a greener country.

I also wouldn't be surprised if we started to see an increase in van leasing companies that are investing in Modec vans as alot of companies that are currently leasing their vans may be interested in a cheaper, more greener alternative.
